But every time your system circulates air through your home, that air also passes through its filtration system. With the right filter, proper airflow, and a well-maintained system, your HVAC equipment can continually remove particles from the air before recirculating it throughout your home.
That becomes especially important during wildfire season or periods of poor outdoor air quality.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, central HVAC filtration can reduce indoor air pollution, although no filtration system can remove every pollutant. During wildfire smoke events, the EPA recommends using a high-efficiency filter—MERV 13 or as high as your particular system can safely accommodate.
Start With the Right Air Filter
Not all furnace filters are created equal.
The MERV rating—short for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value—indicates how effectively a filter captures airborne particles between 0.3 and 10 microns. Higher numbers generally mean better particle filtration.
For homeowners dealing with wildfire smoke or airborne allergens, upgrading your filter can make a noticeable difference. A higher-efficiency filter can help capture particles associated with:

Dust and fine particulate matter

Other airborne debris
There is one important catch: don't automatically buy the highest-MERV filter you can find.
A denser filter creates more resistance to airflow. Your HVAC system needs to be designed to handle that resistance, or an overly restrictive filter can reduce airflow and potentially affect system performance.
The EPA notes that many residential systems can accommodate MERV 13 filtration, but recommends consulting an HVAC professional when you're unsure what your equipment can handle.
During Smoky Days, Keep the Air Moving
Normally, many homeowners leave their thermostat fan setting on Auto, meaning the blower runs primarily when the furnace or air conditioner is actively heating or cooling.
During periods of heavy wildfire smoke, increased circulation can allow more of your home's air to pass through the HVAC filter.
The EPA recommends running the system fan as often as possible during smoky conditions to increase filtration. If your HVAC system has a fresh-air intake, it may also be beneficial during a smoke event to close that intake or switch the system to recirculation so you're not intentionally drawing smoky outdoor air inside.

A filter that spends several days collecting wildfire particles, dust, and allergens is doing exactly what you want it to do, but it's also getting dirty faster.
During periods of particularly poor air quality, check your filter more frequently than you normally would. If it is visibly dirty or restricting airflow, it may need to be replaced sooner than your typical schedule.
Fit matters, too. Your filter should sit snugly in its designated slot so air travels through the filter rather than sneaking around its edges.
Think of filtration as maintenance rather than a one-and-done upgrade. A great filter that hasn't been changed in months isn't doing your HVAC system—or your lungs—any favors.
Whole-Home Air Quality Can Go Beyond a Standard Filter
For households particularly concerned about indoor air quality, allergies, pets, dust, or recurring wildfire smoke, there are additional options beyond the traditional one-inch furnace filter.
Depending on your HVAC system and your home's needs, those may include higher-capacity media filters or whole-home air-cleaning and purification systems. Portable HEPA air cleaners can also provide additional filtration in individual rooms; true HEPA filters are designed to capture at least 99.97% of particles measuring 0.3 microns.
